The American Society of Cinematographers has welcomed Alicia Robbins, whose credits include Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton, as a new member.
Growing up outside Birmingham, Alabama, she became interested in visual storytelling while studying communications at Vanderbilt University, where she gained experience with the campus TV station.
Going on to study at the American Film Institute, she earned an MFA in cinematography in 2003, before shooting independent features, documentaries, music videos and commercials – “anything that kept my creative instincts sharp”, she told the ASC.
Robbins won the ICG Emerging Cinematographer Award in 2018 for her short film Internet Gangsters, and she was hired as C-camera operator/additional cinematographer on the Shondaland series For the People later that year.
She was invited to serve as co-director of photography on season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy, and then lead director of photography on season 17, making history as the first female cinematographer to serve as the full-time DP for the show.
Robbins’ further credits include episodes of Quantum Leap and the limited series Keep Breathing, as well as feature films Babysplitters and The Wedding Invitation.
Also serving as lead cinematographer for Third Law Productions, a company that specialises in 360-degree capture of driving and background footage for visual-effects elements and B-roll, she has worked on the likes of Creed II and The Irishman.
