The American Society of Cinematographers has welcomed Jarin Blaschke as a new member.

Known for his collaborations with director Robert Eggers, Blaschke was Oscar-nominated for his work on Nosferatu and The Lighthouse.

He won an ASC Spotlight Award and Independent Spirit Award for The Lighthouse and received an ASC Award nomination for Nosferatu.

On how Blaschke developed his filmmaking style, American Cinematographer explained: “While filming what he calls ‘low-budget, talky movies in boring white apartments in New York for years and years’, he studied the work of Gordon Willis ASC, who ‘really illustrated how fewer shots could actually make a film stronger, not weaker. He was also a two-dimensional, classically modernist seer with a strong, flat, graphic sense.’”

Explaining his artistic process, Blaschke told British Cinematographer: “My inspiration is going to be real life, like when I’m sitting next to a window, facing a certain direction and it’s winter at a certain time of day, I’m forensically recreating the real life experience that would be the most appropriate lighting for a scene.”

Blaschke’s credits also include Eggers’ The Northman, features Knock at the Cabin, Down a Dark Hall, Back Roads and I Believe in Unicorns, and the miniseries The Pale Horse.

He is currently in production on Eggers’ Werwulf.
