ARRI unveils Alexa 35 Xtreme with faster frame rates

Aug 4, 2025

ARRI has announced the launch of the Alexa 35 Xtreme, a major upgrade to its flagship Alexa 35 that introduces a suite of significant performance improvements aimed squarely at professional filmmakers. The camera, which replaces the original model as the new standard in ARRI’s lineup, promises to streamline workflows while delivering the same renowned image quality.

Among the key advances is support for frame rates up to 660 fps—high enough to eliminate the need for secondary high-speed cameras on many sets. Frame rates up to 330 fps retain the ALEXA 35’s full 17 stops of dynamic range, while a newly introduced Sensor Overdrive mode pushes the camera to 660 fps at 11 stops. These advances are powered by a redesigned main processor and expanded onboard memory.

The Xtreme model also debuts ARRICORE, a new RGB codec that cuts data rates without sacrificing image quality or flexibility in post. Critical image parameters like white balance and tint remain adjustable in postproduction, and ARRICORE maintains compatibility with existing Alexa 35 workflows and metadata standards. ARRI says the codec is launching in beta to encourage feedback from early adopters.

For documentary and nature filmmakers, the camera’s pre-recording buffer has seen a dramatic leap—offering up to 30 seconds in full-resolution 4.6K or five minutes in HD. That’s five times longer than the previous generation and currently the longest pre-roll available in any cinema camera.

Other refinements include improved WiFi performance, 10% lower power consumption, and continued compatibility with the existing ARRI ecosystem of accessories. The Alexa 35 Xtreme will be sold as a new unit or as a €15,900 upgrade for current Alexa 35 owners, with availability set for August 2025.
